The Taiko Master
Daihachi Oguchi used to be a jazz drummer. He took old taiko rhythms and made them new. He created fresh songs and arrangements for groups of drummers to play.
A New Idea for Taiko
One day, he was asked to understand an old sheet of taiko music. It was found in an old building at Suwa Shrine. The music was written in an old Japanese style that was hard to read. He found an old man who had played the tune before. With his help, Oguchi finally understood the music.
However, as a jazz player, he found the rhythm too simple. He wondered why no one played taiko together. Then, a brilliant idea came to him. He decided to change the old traditions.
The Taiko Ensemble
Oguchi was inspired by Western drum sets. He formed a group where each player beat a different taiko drum. This meant the group worked like one big drum set. A high-pitched Shime-daiko drum kept the main rhythm, like a snare drum. A deep Nagado-daiko drum added strong beats, like a bass drum. This new way of playing changed taiko music forever.
Taiko Goes Modern
Mr. Oguchi helped turn traditional taiko into exciting performances. He moved taiko from just festivals and shrines to big concert halls. The years from the 1970s to the 1990s were like a rebirth for taiko music in Japan.
The work of Osuwa Daiko and other early groups in the 1960s was very important. Also, a taiko performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 helped start a huge taiko boom. This boom lasted for many decades.
A Global Impact
Mr. Oguchi also helped start many top taiko groups. One of these is San Francisco Taiko Dojo. This group has performed in Hollywood movies and toured all over the world for over 40 years.
Oguchi also led and performed drumming and dance. This was at the closing ceremony of the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
His Legacy
Daihachi Oguchi once said, "Your heart is a taiko. All people listen to a taiko rhythm 'dontsuku-dontsuku' in their mother's womb." He added, "It's instinct to be drawn to taiko drumming." He also believed, "In taiko, man becomes the sound. In taiko, you can hear the sound through your skin."
Daihachi Oguchi passed away in 2008 at the age of 84. He was scheduled to perform with Kodo, a world-famous taiko group, shortly before he died.
