Daisy Hill Farm House: A Historic Gem
Daisy Hill Farm House was built around 1860. It was made for Robert Bould, who was one of the first farmers in the area. He arrived in New Zealand in the early 1840s. In 1853, he bought land in Johnsonville to start a sheep farm.
From Sheep to Dairy
Years later, between World War I and World War II, the farm changed. It stopped being a sheep farm and became a dairy farm. Families named Hayes and later Martelli ran the dairy farm. They had about forty cows, including Jerseys and Ayrshires. These cows produced milk without needing extra crops for food.
Why This House Is Special
Daisy Hill Farm House was built in a simple Georgian style. This type of architecture was popular a long time ago. It is one of the few houses like it still standing in Wellington today.
