How Accurate Were the Guns?
Understanding how many hits each side got compared to how many shells they fired helps us see how accurate their gunners were.
British Gunnery Accuracy
The British battlecruisers and battleships fired a huge number of shells, over 4,500 in total.
- The 1st and 2nd Battlecruiser Squadrons hit their targets about 1.43% of the time.
- The 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron was more accurate, hitting 4.39% of the time.
- The 5th Battle Squadron hit 2.64% of the time.
- Other British battleships (2nd, 4th, 1st Battle Squadrons) hit 3.70% of the time.
Overall, the British ships achieved an average accuracy of about 2.71%, getting 123 hits.
German Gunnery Accuracy
The German battlecruisers and battleships fired fewer shells, around 3,600 in total.
- The 1st Scouting Group (German battlecruisers) was quite accurate, hitting 3.89% of the time.
- German battleships hit 2.96% of the time.
Overall, the German ships had a slightly higher average accuracy of about 3.39%, getting 124 hits.
This shows that while the British fired more shells, the Germans were slightly more accurate with their shots. Both sides managed to land a similar number of hits on enemy ships during this massive naval battle.
