The Damascus Gate
The amphitheater at the entrance to the Damascus Gate

The Damascus Gate is a famous gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is also known by its Hebrew name, Hebrew: שַׁעַר שְׁכֶם (Sha'ar Sh'khem), which means Nablus Gate. In Arabic, it is called Arabic: باب العامود (Bab al-Amud), meaning the Gate of the Column. This gate is the oldest of the gates leading into Jerusalem's Old City.

History of the Damascus Gate

The Damascus Gate we see today was built in 1538. It was constructed on top of an even older Roman gate. This older Roman gate had a special round square inside the Old City. In the middle of this square stood a tall Roman pillar.

The Original Kilometer Zero

This Roman pillar was very important. It was the original Kilometer Zero mark for Jerusalem. This meant that all distances from Jerusalem to other cities were measured starting from this pillar. Sadly, the pillar was later destroyed and has never been found.

However, the old Roman square and the original Roman gate were discovered underneath the current Damascus Gate. After the British Mandate of Palestine, a new Kilometer Zero marker was set up near the Jaffa Gate, another famous gate in Jerusalem.

Nearby Attractions

Near the entrance to the Damascus Gate, you can find an ancient cave. This cave is called Zedekiah's Cave. It is a very old and interesting place to explore.

In the 2000s, a new amphitheater was built just outside the gate. This amphitheater has 500 seats. It faces the front of the gate, offering a great view for events or performances.
