Scientific classification

Diplolaena dampieri, often called Dampier's rose, is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the Rutaceae family, which also includes citrus fruits. This special plant only grows along the west coast of Western Australia. It has slightly tough, oval-shaped leaves. Its flowers are pale red to orange and bloom from July to September. They also have interesting hairy parts called bracts.

What Does Dampier's Rose Look Like?

Dampier's rose is a rounded, spreading shrub. It usually grows to about 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall. That's taller than most kids!

Leaves and Scent

Its leaves are tough and have a strong, pleasant smell. They are shaped like ovals, up to 40 mm (1.6 inches) long. The top of the leaves is dark olive green and smooth. The bottom side is covered with soft, cream to grey hairs.

Flowers and Bracts

The flowers hang down from the ends of the branches. Each flower is about 10-15 mm (0.4-0.6 inches) wide. They have special leaf-like parts called bracts around them.

  • The outer bracts are narrow and triangular or oval. They are 7-10 mm (0.3-0.4 inches) long. These bracts have thick, star-shaped hairs that are grey or reddish.
  • The inner bracts are narrow and about 12 mm (0.5 inches) long. They are covered with many short, matted, star-shaped hairs.

The petals of the flowers are orange to pale red. They are about 5 mm (0.2 inches) long. Their edges are covered with tiny hairs. Dampier's rose flowers bloom from July to September.

How Was it Named?

The scientific name Diplolaena dampieri was first officially described in 1817. A scientist named René Louiche Desfontaines gave it this name. He published his description in a science journal called Memoires du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle.

Where Does Dampier's Rose Grow?

Dampier's rose is found in the southwest of Western Australia. It grows from Cape Leeuwin in the south, all the way north to Fremantle. You can find it in different places like low heathlands. It also grows in loamy soils, limestone areas, and sand dunes near the coast.
