Damson gin
Homemade damson gin

Damson gin is a special kind of fruit drink, often made at home. It uses damson plums which are soaked in a sweet syrup. This process takes at least eight weeks. Sometimes, other clear drinks are used instead of gin.

This drink is very popular in Britain. Damson plums are ready to pick in early September. People often enjoy this special plum drink around Christmas time. Another similar drink can be made using greengage plums.

There is also an American version called Averell Damson Gin. Instead of soaking whole plums, this drink is made by mixing fresh plum juice with sugar and other ingredients.

What are Damson Plums?

Damson plums are small, dark purple fruits. They look a bit like tiny plums. They have a tart (sour) taste when eaten fresh. This is why they are often used in cooking or for making sweet preserves and drinks.

These plums are part of the rose family, just like apples and cherries. They are known for their strong flavor. Damson trees are quite hardy and can grow in many different places.

How is Damson Gin Made?

Making damson gin is a traditional process.

  • First, ripe damson plums are picked.
  • Then, the plums are often pricked with a fork or needle. This helps their juices come out.
  • The plums are then put into a large jar with sugar.
  • Finally, a clear liquid (like gin or vodka) is poured over the plums and sugar.
  • The jar is sealed and left for several weeks, or even months. During this time, the flavors from the plums mix with the liquid and sugar.
  • After soaking, the liquid is strained to remove the plums. The result is a flavored fruit drink.
