Dana Biosphere Reserve facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is a very special nature area in Jordan. It's a huge place where many different kinds of plants and animals live. This reserve is unique because it covers four different types of environments, making it a home for a wide variety of wildlife.

What is the Dana Biosphere Reserve?

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is the largest nature reserve in Jordan. It was created to protect the amazing nature found there. This reserve helps keep many rare animals and plants safe. It's a place where scientists can study nature and visitors can explore.

Where is Dana Located?

The reserve is found in a region called the Qadisiyah plateau. This area is in the low-lying desert of Wadi Araba. The land in the Dana Biosphere Reserve drops a lot in height. It goes from high mountains at 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet) down to low desert areas. This big change in height creates many different habitats.

Amazing Nature Zones

Dana is the only nature reserve in Jordan that crosses four special "bio-geographical zones." These zones are like different climate areas, each with its own types of plants and animals.

Mediterranean Zone

This zone is similar to the areas around the Mediterranean Sea. It has some green hills and valleys. You might find trees like oak and juniper here. Animals that like a bit more greenery, such as deer and different birds, live in this part of the reserve.

Iran-Turanian Zone

This zone is drier than the Mediterranean one. It's often described as a steppe or semi-desert area. You'll see more grasses and shrubs that can handle less water. Many types of desert rodents and some larger animals, like gazelles, make their home here.

Sahara-Arabian Zone

This is the true desert part of the reserve. It's very dry and hot, with sandy areas and rocky plains. Plants here are tough and can survive with very little water. This zone is home to reptiles like lizards and snakes. You might also find desert foxes and other animals adapted to extreme heat.

Sudanian Penetration Zone

This zone is a bit warmer and has some plants and animals usually found in hotter, more tropical areas. It's a small part of the reserve but adds to its amazing variety. You might see acacia trees and birds that prefer warmer climates.

Protecting Wildlife

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is home to many important species. Some of these animals are endangered, meaning they are at risk of disappearing forever. The reserve works hard to protect them.

Famous Animals of Dana

  • Nubian Ibex: These are wild goats with long, curved horns. They are excellent climbers and live in the rocky areas.
  • Caracal: This is a beautiful wild cat with long, tufted ears. It's a skilled hunter.
  • Syrian Serin: This is a small, colorful bird that is quite rare.
  • Lizards and Snakes: Many different types of reptiles thrive in the desert parts of Dana.

Visiting Dana Reserve

Visitors can explore the Dana Biosphere Reserve in many ways. There are hiking trails for different skill levels. You can see amazing views, learn about the plants, and try to spot wildlife. There are also places to stay, like the Rummana Campsite, where you can experience the beauty of the reserve at night. Visiting helps support the conservation efforts.
