Daniel Dodd was an English artist who lived in the 1700s. He was known for painting portraits and creating detailed pictures for books. He also made engravings, which are special prints made from a metal plate.

Who Was Daniel Dodd?

Daniel Dodd was an artist who was part of a group called the Free Society of Artists. This was a place where artists could show their work. He first displayed his art in 1761 and continued to do so until 1780. At first, he lived in a place called Old Ford, near Bow. Later, he moved into London. Another artist named Thomas Day, who painted tiny portraits, is thought to have learned from Dodd.

Daniel Dodd mostly painted portraits, which are pictures of people. He often used crayons to make these portraits, usually on a small size. Sometimes, he also painted with oils. Some of the people he painted included Margaret Caroline Rudd and Nathan Potts.

Dodd also created etchings, which are a type of printmaking. One of his etchings was a portrait of a singer named Richard Leveridge. He also liked to draw a famous boxer known as "Buckhorse." Dodd not only painted Buckhorse's portrait but also made an engraving of him himself.

Besides portraits, Daniel Dodd designed pictures for many books and magazines. These included Novelist's Magazine and George Frederick Raymond's History of England. He also drew busy scenes of everyday life, showing people doing fashionable things. Some of these detailed pictures were:

  • A View of the Ball at St. James's on Her Majesty's Birthnight (this was engraved by Tukey).
  • A View of the Exhibition of the Royal Academy at Somerset House (engraved by William Angus).
  • The Royal Procession to St. Paul's.
  • The Exhibition of Copley's Picture of the Death of Lord Chatham at the Exhibition Room in Spring Gardens (also engraved by Angus).

His Artistic Family

Daniel Dodd had a son, D. P. Dodd, and a daughter. Both of his children were also artists! They showed their artwork with the Free Society of Artists starting in 1768.
