Early Life and Education
Daniel Pe'er was born in Jerusalem. He attended Balfour school and Ironi Aleph High School in Tel Aviv. After high school, he served in the Israel Defense Forces. He worked as an interviewer, helping to figure out what roles people would be best suited for.
Later, he studied Hebrew literature and English at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also earned a teaching certificate in English. He continued his studies in communication.
A Career in Broadcasting
Daniel Pe'er had a very long career in radio and television. He started working in broadcasting when he was just 12 years old!
Starting in Radio (1955–1969)
His first job was on a youth program called "Everything in Everything." This was part of a children's studio at Kol Yisrael radio. He also helped present a show called "Hetz and Keshet" for young people.
In 1962, after his army service, Pe'er became a news anchor. He hosted many radio shows, including "Diary of the Week" and "Radio Ten." He even won an award for his work on "Radio Ten." By 1969, he was in charge of the announcer section at the radio station.
Moving to Television (1970–1995)
Daniel Pe'er began his television career in 1970. He started as a presenter on a show called "Headline and Margins." In 1971, he left radio to work full-time in television news.
Over the years, he presented many news programs like Mabat and "Boker Tov Israel" (Good Morning Israel). He also hosted special reports and news updates. He even led the foreign news desk and helped edit the main news program.
For ten years, from 1973 to 1983, he was the host of Kolbotek. This was a popular show about consumer rights. He was one of its founders and its first host. He won awards twice for his work on "Kolbotek."
Eurovision Host
In 1979, Daniel Pe'er had a very special role. He hosted the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem! He hosted it alongside Yardena Arazi. He continued to be involved with Eurovision for many years. He hosted "Kdam Eurovision," which is the show where Israel chooses its song for the contest. He hosted it from 1981 to 1983, and again in 1986. He also announced Israel's voting results in 1992 and 1995.
On February 16, 1983, Daniel Pe'er and Dalia Mazor presented the first ever color broadcast of the news program Mabat.
In 1987, he started a new show about transportation called "Wheels." It later changed its name to "On Wheels" and aired until 1994. From 1983 to 1985, he also worked in Canada as an educational representative for the Jewish National Fund. In 1989-1990, he was the voice of the narrator in a children's cartoon series called "Amiko and his friends."
Later Years (1996–2013)
In 1998, Daniel Pe'er hosted the Israel Prize ceremony. This is a very important event that celebrates outstanding achievements in Israel. In 2003, he received an award from the Movement for Quality Government.
He retired from broadcasting at the end of January 2010. He had worked for an amazing 48 years! Even after retiring, he continued to be active. From 2010 to 2013, he worked with a community television program in Jerusalem.
Personal Life
Daniel Pe'er was married and had four children. One of his sons, Yaron Pe'er, also became a television presenter. He works for the Israeli Shopping Channel. Daniel Pe'er passed away on September 28, 2017, in Jerusalem.
