Daniel Chester Forest Sims is a Canadian historian who studies the history of northern British Columbia. He grew up in Prince George and is a member of the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation. He is known for his work on how big projects, like dams, have affected Indigenous communities.

His Education and Early Work

Daniel Sims earned his Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) in history from the University of Alberta in 2017. His main research project, called a dissertation, was about the W. A. C. Bennett Dam and the Williston Lake Reservoir. He studied how these big construction projects changed the lives of the Tsek'ehne people in northern British Columbia. This important work was even nominated for a special award called the Governor-General's Gold Medal.

Before his current role, he was an assistant professor of history at the University of Alberta – Augustana campus.

His Work as a Professor

Today, Daniel Sims is an Associate Professor of First Nations Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia. This means he teaches and researches about the history, cultures, and experiences of Indigenous peoples. From 2020 to 2022, he also served as the Chair of the First Nations Studies department, which means he helped lead the department. He is also part of the council for the Canadian Historical Association, helping to guide historians in Canada.

Leading Indigenous Health Initiatives

On February 1, 2023, Daniel Sims took on another important role. He became an academic co-lead for the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health, working alongside Sheila Blackstock. This center helps to share knowledge and research to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples across Canada. His work here helps make sure that health information is useful and respectful for Indigenous communities.
