The Daniel Young House is a historic building located at 34 Main Street in Lubec, Maine. It was built in 1822 for a local businessman. This house is a rare example of a "double house" from the Federal period in the region. It's also one of the few known wooden double houses of its kind in Maine. Because of its special history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
What is the Daniel Young House?
The Daniel Young House stands in the main village of Lubec. You can find it on the south side of Main Street, just east of the Congregational Church. It's a two-story building made of wood. The roof is shaped like a hip, meaning all four sides slope downwards to the walls. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding, which are long, thin boards.
How the House Looks
The front of the house, which faces the street, has six sections or "bays." These are arranged in a balanced way. There are two main doorways, with windows on either side of them. Both doorways share a decorative top part called a cornice. There are also flat, column-like decorations called pilasters on the outside and between the doors. Each doorway has a half-round window above it, known as a transom.
The doors themselves have panels and windows in their upper half. These doors, along with the brick chimneys and the two-over-one sash windows, were added around 1900. A smaller, one-story section extends from the back of the house.
History of the House
The house was built in 1822 for Daniel Young, who was a businessman in the area. He lived in the right-hand side of the house. For most of its history, the Daniel Young House has been a "two-family" home, meaning two separate families could live there. At one point in the 1900s, it was even divided into four smaller apartments.
This type of double house is very rare in eastern Maine. It's similar to some brick double houses you might find in Portland, but this one is special because it's made of wood.
