About Danilo Toninelli
Danilo Toninelli was born in Soresina, Italy, on August 2, 1974. He studied law at the University of Brescia and finished his degree in 1999.
From 1999 to 2001, he worked as an officer in the Carabinieri Corps. This is a national police force in Italy. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a technical inspector for an insurance company until 2013.
His Political Journey
Early Steps in Politics
In 2010, Toninelli first ran for a political role. He was a candidate for regional councillor in the Lombardy region. He was part of the Five Star Movement political party.
Becoming a Deputy
He was elected as a Deputy in the Chamber of Deputies in 2013. A Deputy is like a member of parliament. From 2013 to 2015, he was the Vice-President of a special committee. This committee dealt with constitutional affairs and interior matters.
Later, he joined other important groups within the Chamber of Deputies. These groups helped make rules for how the Chamber worked.
Moving to the Senate
In the 2018 general election, he was elected as a Senator. A Senator is another type of elected official in Italy's government. On March 27, 2018, he became the leader of the Five Star Movement group in the Senate.
Serving as a Minister
On June 1, 2018, Danilo Toninelli was given a very important job. He became the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. He served in this role in the government led by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
Public Discussions and Challenges

During his time as a minister, Toninelli was often part of public discussions. Some people in the government and media questioned his experience.
Discussions about Contracts
In September 2018, Toninelli spoke about "pressures" he felt. These pressures were from an association of motorway companies. He said they did not want him to share details about motorway contracts. He later showed these documents. It turned out they were sent to the previous minister, Graziano Delrio, months earlier.
Ideas for a Bridge
Later that same month, a bridge in Genoa, Italy, collapsed. This was a very sad event. Toninelli announced plans for rebuilding the bridge. He suggested an idea for a "livable bridge where to eat and have fun." This idea surprised many people and some in Genoa found it confusing.
Geographic Mix-Up
In October 2018, Toninelli talked about travel limits near the Brenner Pass. This pass is an important route through the Alps. He mistakenly called it the "Brenner Tunnel" several times. The Brenner Tunnel is a different, much longer tunnel project.
