Danilo Toninelli (born 2 August 1974) is an Italian politician. He has been a member of the Five Star Movement party. He served as the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in Italy from 2018 to 2019.
About Danilo Toninelli
Danilo Toninelli was born in Soresina, Italy, on 2 August 1974. He studied law at the University of Brescia and finished his degree in 1999.
After university, from 1999 to 2001, he worked as an officer in the Carabinieri Corps, which is a national police force in Italy. Before he became a politician, he worked as a technical inspector for an insurance company until 2013.
His Political Journey
Danilo Toninelli began his political career in 2010. He ran for a position called regional councillor in the 2010 Lombard regional election, representing the Five Star Movement party. However, he was not elected that time.
In 2013, he was elected as a Deputy in the Chamber of Deputies during the 2013 Italian general election. The Chamber of Deputies is one of the two houses of the Italian Parliament, similar to a lower house. From 2013 to 2015, he was the Vice-President of a committee that dealt with important government and interior matters.
In the 2018 Italian general election, he was elected as a Senator. The Senate of the Republic is the other house of the Italian Parliament. Soon after, in March 2018, he became the leader of the Five Star Movement group in the Senate.
On 1 June 2018, Danilo Toninelli was given a very important job. He was appointed as the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in the government led by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. This role meant he was in charge of things like roads, railways, ports, and airports in Italy.
Challenges and Public Comments

During his time as a minister, Danilo Toninelli sometimes faced criticism. People, especially those from other political parties, would comment on his ideas or statements.
For example, in September 2018, he spoke about some "pressures" he felt from a group of motorway companies. He said they didn't want him to share details about contracts for managing motorways. He later presented documents related to this, which helped clarify the situation.
Later that same month, after a bridge collapsed in Genoa, he announced plans for rebuilding it. He suggested the idea of a "livable bridge where to eat and have fun." This comment caused some confusion and upset some people in Genoa because of the serious nature of the tragedy.
In October 2018, he talked about how rules in South Tyrol were affecting Italy's economy, especially regarding the Brenner Pass. However, he mistakenly called it the "Brenner Tunnel" several times, which is a different structure.
