Danish Mathematical Society facts for kids
The Danish Mathematical Society (also known as Dansk Matematisk Forening) is a group for Danish mathematicians. It was started in 1873 at the University of Copenhagen. This was just one year after the French Mathematical Society began. The main goal of the society is to help mathematics grow in both research and teaching.
Discovering the Danish Mathematical Society
This important society was created thanks to an idea from Thorvald N. Thiele. He wanted a place where mathematicians could come together. The very first group in charge included Thiele himself, along with Hieronymus Georg Zeuthen and Julius Petersen. They worked to get the society up and running.
Leaders of the Society
Over the years, many talented mathematicians have led the Danish Mathematical Society. Here are some of the people who served as president:
- Johan Jensen (1892–1903)
- Vilhelm Herman Oluf Madsen (1903–1910)
- Niels Nielsen (1910–1917)
- Johannes Mollerup (1917–1926)
- Harald Bohr (1926–1929, and again from 1937–1951)
- Børge Jessen (1954–1958)
- Werner Fenchel (1958–1962)
- Bodil Branner (1998–2002)
