Public Service and Community Work

Working for the Government

From 1993 to 1996, Daniel Tabor worked for the United States Department of Commerce. He helped connect Southern California with the Secretary of Commerce, Ronald H. Brown. This role involved making sure the government understood the needs of the region.

Helping Local Communities

Daniel Tabor played a key role in a big agreement. This agreement was between Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and a group called the LAX Coalition. This group worked for economic, environmental, and educational fairness. The agreement brought $500 million in investments to local communities. This money helped improve the areas around the airport.

Serving on the City Council

From 2002 to 2010, Daniel Tabor was a member of the Inglewood City Council. He represented the 1st District. During his time on the council, he worked to bring people together.

Inglewood had a mix of different groups, and sometimes there were disagreements. In 2010, about half the people in Inglewood were Hispanic, and about 43% were African-American. Daniel Tabor helped ease tensions between these groups. He even organized a "Day of Dialogue" in 2008. This event brought people together to talk and understand each other better.

Becoming Mayor of Inglewood

A Time of Change

In January 2010, the previous mayor of Inglewood, Roosevelt F. Dorn, left his position. Daniel Tabor then ran in a special election to finish the rest of Dorn's term.

In August 2010, Daniel Tabor won a runoff election. He was officially sworn in as mayor on September 14, 2010. When he became mayor, the city faced a big financial challenge. Inglewood had a $15 million budget deficit.

The Next Election

In the general election on November 2, 2010, Daniel Tabor received 43.2% of the votes. The next candidate, James T. Butts Jr., received 31.0%. Since no candidate won more than half the votes, another election was needed.

A runoff election was held in January 2011. Daniel Tabor lost this election to James T. Butts Jr. The final vote was 3,776 for Butts and 3,000 for Tabor. James T. Butts Jr. became mayor on January 27, 2011. The Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper described this period as a "tumultuous year of elections" for the city. Inglewood was also dealing with an $18 million budget deficit at that time.
