Daria Nicolodi (born June 19, 1950 – died November 26, 2020) was a talented Italian actress and writer for movies and TV shows. She was known for her work in Italian cinema, especially in horror films. She often worked with director Dario Argento, who was also her partner.
Early Life and Career
Daria Nicolodi was born in Florence, Italy, on June 19, 1950. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother, Fulvia, studied old languages. Her grandfather, Alfredo Casella, was a famous composer. In the late 1960s, Daria moved to Rome.
In 1970, she appeared in a TV variety show called Babau. This show was considered too daring at the time. Because of this, it was not shown until six years later. In the early 1970s, Nicolodi also worked in movies and theater. She was guided by director Elio Petri.
Daria Nicolodi also acted in several TV productions. These included the series Nicotera and Without a Trace in 1972. She also starred in Portrait of a Veiled Woman (1975). Later, she appeared in Saturnino Farandola (1978) and Rosaura at 10 (1981).
Nicolodi became well-known for her roles in horror films. She starred in five movies directed by Dario Argento. These films were Deep Red (1975), Inferno (1980), Tenebrae (1982), Phenomena (1985), and Opera (1987). She also acted in Shock (1977). This was the last film by another famous Italian horror director, Mario Bava.
After her relationship with Argento ended in 1985, Nicolodi continued acting. She appeared in movies like Paganini Horror and The Picture of Joy. She also acted in films directed by her daughter, Asia Argento. In 2007, Nicolodi returned to the big screen. She worked with her daughter Asia in Dario Argento's film Mother of Tears. This movie was a sequel to two of Argento's earlier films, Suspiria and Inferno.
Personal Life
In the early 1970s, Daria Nicolodi had a relationship with sculptor Mario Ceroli. They had a daughter named Anna, who was born in 1973. Sadly, Anna passed away in a car accident in 1994.
Nicolodi later met director Dario Argento in 1974. They met while casting for the film Deep Red. They had both a professional and romantic relationship. Their daughter, Asia Argento, was born in 1975. Daria and Dario separated in 1985. Asia later had a daughter of her own, whom she named Anna, in memory of her half-sister.
Daria Nicolodi passed away in Rome on November 26, 2020. She was 70 years old.
Recognition
In 2012, Daria Nicolodi was honored at a special event. It was called Argento: Il Cinema Nel Sangue. This event took place at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. A "retrospective" is like a special show that looks back at someone's work.
This event celebrated how much the Argento family influenced filmmaking. It showed their impact in Italy and around the world. The event highlighted Daria Nicolodi's important work in Dario Argento's films. It also recognized the contributions of his father (Salvatore), brother (Claudio), and daughter (Asia Argento).
