Darin Allen started his boxing journey at age 10. His coach was William "Bill" Cummings Jr. Coach Cummings was a two-time U.S. AAU Boxing Coach of the Year. Sadly, Coach Cummings passed away in April 1985. This was a very difficult time for Darin.
However, Darin found inspiration from his close friend and teammate. This friend was Jerry Page. Jerry Page won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. With this new motivation, Darin Allen went on to win his first national amateur title in December 1985.
