Who is Darryl Banks?
Darryl Banks was born to Aubrey and Mary Banks (Fowler). He grew up in central Ohio and always loved art. While in high school, he decided he wanted to draw comics for a living. To follow his dream, he studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio.
How He Started in Comics
After college, Darryl Banks sent many examples of his art to big companies like DC Comics and Marvel Comics. He also went to comic conventions to show his work to publishers. Friends told him to try smaller, independent companies too. This advice paid off!
Innovation Publishing gave him his first jobs. He worked on a two-part Cyberpunk story. After that, he drew for the Justice Machine series.
Later, at Millennium Publications, Banks created a three-issue mini-series. This was based on The Wild Wild West TV show. He also adapted Doc Savage into a comic called The Monarch of Armageddon.
Working at DC Comics
Darryl Banks then joined DC Comics. He first illustrated Legion of Super-Heroes. Then, he became the main artist for Green Lantern vol. 3. His work on Green Lantern started with the "Emerald Twilight" story.
Banks drew most of the Green Lantern issues from #50 to #142. He helped create the popular character Kyle Rayner. He also designed the cool costumes for many other characters. These included Parallax, Grayven, Fatality, Dr. Polaris, and Dr. Light.
Teaching Art
In 1995, Darryl Banks started teaching. He taught two courses at his old college, the Columbus College of Art and Design. One course was about illustration. The other was about designing comic books. He shared his knowledge with new artists.
