Discovering Darwinia diosmoides
This unique plant was first officially described in 1828. A Swiss botanist named Augustin Pyramus de Candolle gave it the original name Genetyllis diosmoides. Later, in 1865, an English botanist named George Bentham moved it to a different group of plants. This new group was the genus Darwinia, which is why it's now called Darwinia diosmoides.
What is a Shrub?
A shrub is a woody plant that is smaller than a tree. It usually has many stems branching out from near the ground. Darwinia diosmoides is a good example of a shrub. It typically grows to be between 0.3 and 1.2 meters tall.
Where Does it Grow?
Darwinia diosmoides is an "endemic" plant. This means it grows naturally in only one specific place in the world. For this plant, that special place is the southwest region of Western Australia. You won't find it growing wild anywhere else!
Its Beautiful Flowers
When Darwinia diosmoides blooms, it produces lovely white flowers. These flowers are an important part of the plant's life cycle. They help the plant reproduce and create new seeds.
