David Bruce was a Scottish doctor who was active around the year 1660. He was known for his medical work in the 17th century.

Early Life and Education

David Bruce was the son of Andrew Bruce. His father was a very important person, the head of St. Leonard's College at St. Andrew's University from 1630 to 1647.

David Bruce first studied at St. Andrew's University. He earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree there.

Studying Medicine

After his studies in Scotland, David Bruce traveled to France. He continued his education there, focusing on medicine in cities like Paris and Montpellier.

He had planned to get his medical degree in Italy, specifically in Padua. However, a serious outbreak of the plague prevented him from going there. Instead, he earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in Valence, France, on May 7, 1657.

Later, on March 27, 1660, David Bruce was officially recognized as a doctor of medicine at Oxford University in England.

A Royal Doctor

David Bruce worked closely with his great-uncle, Sir John Wedderburne. Together, they served as doctors to the Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke of York later became King James II of England.

For many years, David Bruce took on most of the duties because his great-uncle was not well. After a long time in this important role, he decided to leave the position. He then spent some time traveling abroad.

Later Life and Achievements

Eventually, David Bruce settled in Edinburgh, Scotland. He became very well-known and respected for his medical practice there. Records from 1690 suggest he was still living and working in Edinburgh at that time.

Joining Important Societies

David Bruce was invited to join the College of Physicians on December 24, 1660. This was a significant group for doctors in London.

He was also one of the very first members of the Royal Society. The Royal Society is a famous group dedicated to promoting science. Being an original member shows he was a respected and forward-thinking scientist of his time.
