David Dalrymple, Lord Westhall (1719–1784) was an important Scottish lawyer in the 1700s. He became a judge in Scotland's highest court, known as the Senator of the College of Justice.

About David Dalrymple's Life

David Dalrymple was born on August 27, 1719. He was the fourth son of Hew Dalrymple, Lord Drummore, who was also an important legal figure. David came from a family with a strong background in law and public service in Scotland.

He became a lawyer, called an advocate, in 1743. This meant he could speak for people in court. Later, he took on other important roles. In 1746, he became the Procurator for the Church of Scotland, which meant he was the main lawyer for the church. In 1748, he became the Sheriff of Aberdeen, a judge responsible for law and order in that area.

His most important role came in 1777 when he became a Senator of the College of Justice. This was a very high position, like being a judge in the top court in Scotland.

In Edinburgh, David Dalrymple lived in a historic house. It was located at the bottom of a street called Advocates Close, which was named after lawyers. This house was near the famous Royal Mile and St Giles Cathedral. Around 1782, he moved to a newer area on Buccleuch Street, where he lived until he passed away.

David Dalrymple was married to Jean Aberdein. They had a large family with at least ten children.

When David Dalrymple Died

David Dalrymple passed away on April 26, 1784. After his death, another judge named Alexander Gordon, Lord Rockville, took his place as a Senator of the College of Justice.
