John David Drummond, the 8th Earl of Perth, was a Scottish nobleman, banker, and politician. He was born on May 13, 1907, and passed away on November 25, 2002, at the age of 95. From 1957 to 1962, he served as the Minister of State for Colonial Affairs, which meant he helped manage affairs for countries that were still under British rule.

Early Life and Education

David Drummond was the son of Eric Drummond, the 7th Earl of Perth. His mother was Angela Mary Constable-Maxwell. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family.

He went to school at Downside School and later studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Because his father often traveled for his work, David spent a lot of his childhood with his aunt, the Duchess of Norfolk.

Career and Public Service

David Drummond started his career in banking. When World War II began, he went to Paris to help with propaganda efforts. Later, he returned to London to work in important government offices, including the War Cabinet office and the Ministry of Production. He was recruited for these roles by Anthony Eden, a well-known politician.

After the war, in 1945, he joined a company called Schroders, where he worked as a partner until 1956.

In December 1951, when his father passed away, David became the Earl of Perth. From 1952 to 1963, he was a "Representative peer" for Scotland, meaning he was one of the noblemen chosen to represent Scotland in the House of Lords, part of the British Parliament.

In 1957, even though he wasn't a member of the Conservative party, he was appointed Minister of State for Colonial Affairs in Harold Macmillan's government. He held this important position until 1962. That same year, he also became a "Privy Counsellor," which meant he was a special advisor to the Queen.

Lord Perth was also very involved in promoting Scottish arts and history. He served as a trustee for the National Museums of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland. He was also a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, which is a group dedicated to studying ancient things and history.

Family Life

In 1934, Lord Perth married Nancy Fincke, who was from America. They got married in New York City. They lived in a place called Stobhall in Scotland and had two sons.

Lady Perth passed away in 1996. Lord Perth himself died in November 2002. His older son, John Eric Drummond, became the 9th Earl of Perth after him.
