David Ferguson Hunter was a very brave Scottish soldier. He received the Victoria Cross (VC), which is the highest award for courage in battle. This special medal is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries.

David Hunter's Amazing Bravery

Holding the Line at Moeuvres

On September 16 and 17, 1918, Corporal Hunter was given a very important and dangerous job. He was told to take control of an advanced outpost. This outpost was made up of shell holes very close to the enemy lines in a place called Moeuvres, France.

There was no chance to check out the area beforehand. The next afternoon, Corporal Hunter discovered a big problem. The enemy had set up new posts all around him. This meant his small group was completely cut off and surrounded.

A True Hero's Stand

Despite being isolated, Corporal Hunter decided to hold his position. He and his men were extremely short on food and water. Even with these tough conditions, he managed to keep his post for more than 48 hours.

During this time, the enemy attacked his position many times. He fought them off every single time. He also had to deal with artillery fire from his own side, which sometimes landed right on his post. He bravely held out until a counter-attack from his own army finally reached him and relieved his position.

Recognition for Courage

For his incredible bravery and determination, David Hunter was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was later promoted to the rank of sergeant on October 23, 1918.

David Ferguson Hunter passed away on February 14, 1965. On August 12, 2004, a special memorial stone was placed on his grave in Dunfermline Cemetery. This stone honors his amazing courage and sacrifice.
