David Fowler was born on June 1, 1950. He is a British scientist who studies the environment. He is known as an expert on air pollution. His work focuses on how gases and tiny particles move between the land and the air. He also studies how pollution affects plants.

David Fowler's Scientific Journey

David Fowler studied environmental physics at the University of Nottingham. He earned his first degree in 1972 and his Ph.D. in 1976. After finishing his studies, he moved to Edinburgh. There, he joined the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology. This institute later became part of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. He worked there for 40 years. During his career, he wrote about 250 scientific papers. These papers were reviewed by other experts.

Helping with Air Quality Rules

Besides his scientific research, David Fowler also helped create rules about air quality. He worked with governments in the UK and Europe. He was a member of many scientific groups. These groups included the Royal Society Global Environmental Research Committee. He led this committee starting in 2011. He was also a special member of the Air Quality Expert Group.

In 2008, David Fowler led a group of European air pollution experts. They created a big study about ground-level ozone. Ozone is a gas that can be harmful to people and the environment. The study found that current ways to control pollution were not enough. They said that ozone levels were still too high. The group asked for new global efforts to reduce ozone and its causes.

Awards and Honors

David Fowler has received many important awards for his work. In 1991, he became an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham. This means he was recognized for his contributions without being a full-time professor there. In 1999, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2002, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. These are very high honors for scientists in the UK. In 2005, he received the CBE. This award was given to him for his important work in atmospheric sciences.
