Historic Homes in Columbia
These two historic buildings tell a story about the early days of Columbia. They were built a long time ago, when the city was just starting.
The David Gordon House
The David Gordon House was a large, two-story home. It was built in a style called an "I-house." This means it was shaped like the letter "I" when you looked at it from the side. The house had 13 rooms. It was first built around 1823. Over the years, more parts were added to it. These additions happened in the 1830s, 1890s, and 1930s. The house was located in what is now Stephens Lake Park. Sadly, the David Gordon House was destroyed by fire in the early 1990s.
The Collins Log Cabin
The Collins Log Cabin is even older than the David Gordon House. It was built in 1818. This cabin is a "single pen log house." This means it had one main room on the ground floor. It also had a "loft design," which means there was a sleeping area upstairs. Unlike the David Gordon House, the Collins Log Cabin survived. It was moved from Stephens Lake Park. Now, you can find it on the campus of the Boone County Historical Society.
A Place in History
Both the David Gordon House and the Collins Log Cabin were recognized as very important. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list includes buildings and places that are important to the history of the United States.
