His Career and Public Life
David Holbache started his career as a legal helper in 1376. He worked for the Earl of Arundel, who was a powerful lord in Oswestry.
He likely changed his name to Holbache to fit in better with the English system. At that time, it was harder for Welsh people to get important jobs. In 1377, he started working for the King as a lawyer in Wales. He helped with legal cases in places like Conwy.

Founding Oswestry School
A School for the Future
One of David Holbache's most important actions was founding Oswestry School. In 1407, he and his wife, Gwenhwyfar ferch Ieuan, used some of their land to pay for a schoolmaster. This money helped start the school.
The first school building was a half-timbered building. It was located near St. Oswald's Parish Church in Oswestry. This old building is still standing today. It is now a heritage center.
School Records
It is hard to know much about the early days of Oswestry School. This is because many old records were not kept well. We do not even know the names of the headmasters for the first 154 years. More information about the school became available after England and Wales became one country. This happened under the English crown in the 1500s.
His Family and Legacy
Around the year 1400, David Holbache married Gwenhwyfar ferch Ieuan ab John. Her English name was Guinevere. She was from Sweeney, a place near Oswestry. She brought land in Sweeney, Treflach, and Maesbury into the marriage.
David Holbache is remembered for his important contributions. He was a lawyer, a politician, and someone who cared about education. His founding of Oswestry School shows his dedication to helping young people learn.
