Who Was Lord Balgray?
David Williamson was born in 1761. His parents were Alexander Williamson of Balgray and Christian Robertson. He later added "Robertson" to his name.
His Home and Land
David owned a large area of land called the Balgray estate. This estate was located just north of a town called Lockerbie in the southwest part of Scotland. Owning an estate meant he was a person of importance in his community.
Becoming a High-Ranking Judge
In 1811, David Robertson Williamson became a Senator of the College of Justice. This meant he was one of the top judges in Scotland. He took over this important role from another judge named Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee. When Lord Balgray passed away in 1837, John Cunninghame, Lord Cunninghame became the new judge in his place.
His Family Life
David Robertson Williamson married his cousin, who was Miss Robertson of Lawers. After their marriage, he started using the name David Robertson Williamson. He also had a nephew, who was also named David Robertson Williamson (born 1830, died 1919).
