The Davidsonia jerseyana, also known as Davidson's plum or Mullumbimby plum, is a special tree from Australia. It is a small, thin tree that grows in subtropical rainforests. These trees can reach up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) tall.
Its leaves are hairy and made up of many smaller leaflets. They can be quite long, from 35 to 60 centimeters (about 14 to 24 inches). This tree is endemic to a small part of northern New South Wales. This means it grows naturally only in that specific area.
The fruit of the Davidson's plum grows right from the tree's trunk. It looks a bit like the plums you might see in Europe. Sadly, the Davidsonia jerseyana is an endangered species. This means there are not many of these trees left in the wild. There are two other types of Davidson's plum trees as well.
What is Davidson's Plum Used For?
People grow Davidson's plum trees because their fruit is pleasantly sour. This unique taste makes it great for many commercial products. You can find Davidson's plum in jam, wine, ice cream, and sauces.
Growing Davidson's Plum Trees
New Davidson's plum trees are grown from seeds. They usually start producing fruit by their fourth year. These trees produce a lot of fruit directly from their trunks. Farmers often cover the fruit with bags. This protects them from getting sunburned and from birds like Australian king parrots.
Young Davidson's plum trees need some care. They like to be protected from strong sunlight and wind. They also need enough water in the soil. Good soil nutrition helps them grow strong and healthy.
