About Dee White

Dee White was born in March 1964 in Melbourne, Australia. Her father came to Australia from Austria as a child during World War II. Before becoming a full-time author, Dee worked as a writer for advertisements and newspapers. She enjoys drawing, painting, golf, and traveling.

Dee loves to visit schools and give workshops. She has spoken at many events, including the Children's Book Council of Australia Conference. She also teaches online writing workshops for children around the world.

Dee wanted to be a writer since she was a child. She started writing seriously when her own children were small. They were on a long camping trip around Australia. She first wrote articles about parenting and camping. Once her children started school, she began writing children's books.

Awards and Fellowships

Dee White has received several special awards and opportunities for her writing.

In 2009, she earned a May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowship in Brisbane. This allowed her to focus on her writing. She also took part in a residency with the May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust in 2010.

In 2013, Dee won a mentorship from SCBWI Nevada. She also received a grant from Copyright Agency Ltd. in Australia. These helped her attend a writing conference in Nevada.

In 2017, Dee received a grant from Creative Victoria. This allowed her to spend a month in Paris. She researched her novel Beyond Belief there. This book was inspired by a true story. It tells how Muslims at a Paris Mosque helped save Jewish children during World War II.
