About Dee White
Dee White was born in March 1964 in Melbourne, Australia. Her father came to Australia from Austria in 1939. This was during World War II. Before becoming a full-time writer, Dee worked in advertising. She also worked as a journalist, writing for newspapers and magazines. Dee enjoys drawing, painting, playing golf, and traveling to new places.
Sharing Her Love for Writing
Dee loves to share her passion for writing. She visits schools and gives workshops. She has also spoken at big events for writers and teachers. These include the Children's Book Council of Australia Conference. She also spoke at the SCBWI Europolitan Conference in Amsterdam. Dee continues to run online writing workshops for children. These workshops connect her with young writers around the globe.
How She Started Writing
Dee wanted to be a writer ever since she was a child. She started writing seriously when her own children were small. They were on a long camping trip around Australia. She began by writing articles about parenting and camping. Once her children started school, she focused on writing books for kids.
Awards and Fellowships
Dee White has received special awards for her writing. In 2009, she won a May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowship. This allowed her to spend time focusing on her writing. She also took part in a special writing residency in Brisbane in 2010. In 2013, Dee won a mentorship from SCBWI Nevada. She also received a grant from Copyright Agency Ltd. This helped her attend a conference in Nevada.
In 2017, Dee received a grant from Creative Victoria. This grant allowed her to spend a month in Paris. She used this time to research her book, Beyond Belief. This book is for middle-grade readers. It was inspired by the true story of Muslims in a Paris Mosque. They helped save Jewish children during World War II.
