Del Monte Kenya Limited is a big company in Kenya that works with pineapples. They grow pineapples, process them, and put them into cans. They also make other products like pineapple juice concentrates, a type of sugar from the pineapple, and even food for cattle.

Thanks to Del Monte Kenya, canned pineapple is the biggest manufactured export from Kenya. Kenya is also one of the top five countries in the world that exports pineapples. In the past, the company faced some challenges regarding its workers and working conditions, but they worked to fix these issues.

How Del Monte Kenya Started

The company began in 1948 and was first called Kenya Canners. Later, in 1965, after the US company Del Monte Corporation was sold, the company became Del Monte Royal. At that time, two families from South Africa owned most of it.

In 2002, another company called Cirio Alimentare bought a large part of Del Monte Kenya. After this, the company changed its name to Cirio Del Monte Kenya Limited. The company has also earned special certificates, like the International Organization for Standardization SA8000, which shows they meet high standards for how they treat their workers.

Inside Del Monte Kenya

Del Monte Kenya has a huge pineapple farm that is about 10,000 acres (which is about 40 square kilometers). This is a very large area! The company employs around 6,000 people. Many of their workers, about 60%, are women.

The company has different types of employees. Some are permanent staff who get benefits like sick pay and holidays. Others are seasonal workers who have contracts but fewer benefits. There are also casual laborers who work without a contract or benefits. All workers are paid according to Kenya's laws, which set a minimum wage. The pineapple farms are watched over by security guards, sometimes on horseback with dogs, or in Jeeps.

Making Pineapple Products

In 2011, Del Monte Kenya's yearly earnings were estimated to be KSh.4.5 billion. They can process about 1,500 tons of pineapples every day! Because of this company, canned pineapple is Kenya's largest single manufactured export. Kenya is also one of the world's top five pineapple exporters.

Most of the products made by Del Monte Kenya are sent to countries in Europe. Here's what they make:

  • 34% is pineapple juice concentrate.
  • 22% is solid canned pineapple.
  • 21% is mill juice sugar.
  • 22% is cattle feed.
