Delia Bennett (born 1892, died 1976) was a talented American artist. She was famous for her amazing quilts. Delia was part of a group of quilters from a place called Gee's Bend in Alabama. People say she was the leader of a very large family of quilters there. Her beautiful artwork is now kept in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Delia Bennett's Early Life
Delia Bennett was born in 1892. Her parents were S.S. Pettway and Pleasant Pettway. She grew up on the Brown Plantation in Gee's Bend, Alabama. Delia married Eddie Bennett. Together, they raised eleven children: seven girls and four boys.
How Delia's Family Lived
Delia and Eddie were "subsistence farmers." This means they grew most of the food they needed to eat in their own backyard. They also had to grow cotton for free. This was part of the agreement for living on the plantation land. The Spurlin family in Camden, Alabama, owned this land.
