The Deloitte Centre is a tall office building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Auckland, New Zealand. It was built between 2006 and 2009. This building has 18 floors for offices, plus 4 levels underground for parking cars. It also has 3 levels for special equipment that helps the building run. At the very top, there's a unique two-story design feature. The whole building is about 100 meters (328 feet) tall. It's designed to be very eco-friendly, aiming for a 5-star 'Green Star' environmental rating. This means it's good for the planet!

History of the Deloitte Centre

The Deloitte Centre stands on a special piece of land in Auckland's city center, called the CBD. It's surrounded by important streets like Queen Street, Shortland Street, Fort Street, and Jean Batten Place. This spot is interesting because it used to be part of Auckland's old shoreline back in the 1800s. Everything north of where the tower now stands was once covered by the Waitematā Harbour.

Over the years, different buildings have stood on this site. First, there was the Victoria Arcade, built in 1885. Later, in 1978, the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) built a smaller office building there. In 2004, BNZ decided they wanted a much taller building, a skyscraper, for their offices.

Combining Old and New Design

When the new Deloitte Centre was planned, it was decided to include parts of an older building called the Jean Batten Building. This building had some beautiful old walls, or facades, on its back and sides. Some people were worried when parts of this historic building were taken down to make way for the new tower. However, the architects explained that important parts of the old structure were kept or rebuilt after the new building went up. This created a cool mix of old and new styles in the final design.

Who Uses the Building?

The Deloitte Centre is home to several important businesses.

  • Bank of New Zealand (BNZ): About 56% of the office space is used by the Bank of New Zealand. They also have 70 car parks and a large shop area facing Queen Street.
  • Deloitte Services Ltd: The other 44% of the office space is used by Deloitte Services Ltd. They occupy floors 11 through 18. Deloitte also has 100 car parks and changing rooms in the basement.
  • True Alliance: This company is the third main user of the building. They rent four retail shops on the ground floor. These shops sell items from famous international brands like Lacoste, Ben Sherman, Rockport, and The North Face.

Inside the Building

The building has special "plant rooms" on the upper levels and on level 7. These rooms hold important machinery that helps the building work, like air conditioning systems. The ground floor has a grand entrance and a very tall foyer (about 12 meters or 39 feet high) at the corner of Queen and Shortland Street. The rest of the ground floor is used for shops. There are also four levels of underground car parking, providing 170 spaces, which can be reached from Fort Street.
