Delphine Red Shirt, born in 1957, is a Native American author and teacher. She is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. This tribe lives on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Growing Up and Learning

Delphine Red Shirt grew up as an Oglala Lakota. Her home was the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She went to Holy Rosary High School. This school is now called Red Cloud Indian School. Later, she studied at Regis College. She focused on Accounting and History. She earned a special degree in Creative Writing from Wesleyan University. She also got a high degree in American Indian Studies. This was from the University of Arizona.

Her Work and Teaching

Delphine Red Shirt has had many important roles. She worked with the United Nations. There, she helped represent indigenous people. She also taught at several universities. These include Yale University and Connecticut College. Currently, she teaches at Stanford University. She teaches about Lakota language and history. She also helps and guides Native students.

Her Books and Writings

Red Shirt has written three books. Her first book is called Bead On An Anthill: A Lakota Childhood. Her second book is Turtle Lung Woman’s Granddaughter. Her most recent book is George Sword’s Warrior Narratives. This book has won two awards. It received the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award. It also won the Electa Quinney Award for Published Stories. Her writings have also appeared in other books. She writes regularly for Lakota Country Times. She has also written for Native Sun News and Indian Country Today.
