The Story of Denbo
A Town Built for Coal Miners
Denbo was created because of the Vesta No. 6 coal mine. This mine was owned and run by a large company called the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company. This company was very important in making steel. The Vesta No. 6 mine was part of a big area known as the Klondike Coalfield, where lots of coal was found.
To make sure the miners had a place to live, the company built Denbo as a "patch town." The Vesta No. 6 mine operated for many years, from about 1903 until 1947. After the mine closed, its entrance was sealed up and covered over.
