A Village of Giant Pies
The village of Denby Dale has a super cool tradition. For a long time, they have baked HUGE pies! They make these giant pies to celebrate important national events. The very first giant pie was made way back in 1788. It celebrated King George III getting better after being unwell.
The tenth giant pie was baked in the year 2000 for the new Millennium. This pie was enormous! It measured about 40 feet (12 m) long. It also weighed a massive 12 tons. Imagine how many slices that would make!
The Company's Journey
The Denby Dale Pie company began in 2001. In 2011, the company faced some difficulties. It was then sold to another company called Chapel Foods Ltd. A poet from Yorkshire, Ian McMillan, even wrote a special poem about Denby Dale pies in 2012. In 2016, Denby Dale Pies became part of a bigger company called Country Style Foods.
Pies on TV!
Denby Dale Pies has even been on television! In 2012, they appeared on a show called The Great Northern Cookbook on Channel 5. For the show, they helped to recreate a giant pie. This pie was like one made in 1887. That pie celebrated Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The recreated pie weighed 3.8 tons!
The pies were also shown on the popular BBC One show The Great British Bake Off. This happened in an episode in September 2015.
Winning Awards and Royal Visits
Denby Dale Pies has won some cool awards! In 2004, their meat and potato pie was named the best in the country. This was in a contest held by ITV's The Paul O'Grady Show. The final part of the competition was shown live on TV.
In 2012, their Chicken and Gravy Pie won a silver award. This was at the British Pie Awards. A very special visitor came to the company's main factory in Denby Dale. In July 2013, Princess Anne visited the pie factory!
