Becoming an Actress
Denise Pelletier was born in 1923 in a town called Saint-Jovite, Quebec. Her father, Albert Pelletier, was a writer who reviewed books. Her brother, Gilles Pelletier, also became a famous actor.
After finishing school, Denise saw an advertisement for acting classes. These classes were offered by the Montreal Repertory Theatre. She decided to join and quickly got her first acting role. At this theatre, she performed in many classic plays. She also acted in radio shows, which were very popular at the time.
Acting on Screen
In 1943, Denise Pelletier appeared in À la croisée des chemins. This was one of the very first films made in Quebec. She was special because she could act well in both English and French. Not many Canadian actors could do that back then!
She continued to impress audiences in plays like Les Parents terribles in 1947. In 1951, she met Jean Gascon at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. He later also received the Order of Canada.
Television Star
When television came to Canada in 1952, Denise Pelletier quickly became a TV star. She played one of her most famous roles as Cécile in the show Les Plouffes. Even though she loved acting on stage the most, she was named 'Miss Radio Television' in 1955.
She also starred with Jean Duceppe in a show called De Neuf à Cinq in 1968. In the 1970s, she acted in Mont-Joye and Trois Petits Tours.
Awards and Last Performance
In 1970, Denise Pelletier received the Order of Canada. This award recognized her amazing contributions to Canadian arts. Her very last performance was in 1975. She acted in a show called The Divine Sarah at the Stratford Festival.
Sadly, Denise Pelletier passed away on May 24, 1976. This was just two days after her 53rd birthday.
Her Legacy
To remember Denise Pelletier and her important work, the government of Quebec created a special award. It is called the Prix Denise-Pelletier. This award honors people who have done great things in the performing arts.
