Dennis High School is a very important historic school building. It is also known as Dennis Elementary School and Dennis Primary School. This school is located in Bishopville, South Carolina, in Lee County, South Carolina.
Dennis High School was built especially for African-American students. At that time, schools were separated by race. White students went to Bishopville High School, which was just three blocks away.
A School Built on Hope
Even though the law said that schools for different races should be "separate but equal," this was not always true. For example, Bishopville High School for white students cost $71,000 to build. But Dennis High School, for Black students, only cost $17,000.
This difference meant that more money was spent on each white student. About $48.38 was spent per student at Bishopville High. For each Black student at Dennis, only $5.68 was spent. This shows a big difference in how much support each school received.
Later, Dennis High School had a fire. For 12 years after the fire, high school students had to share classrooms with elementary students. Dennis was the only school in the county for Black students. Public bus service to the school did not start until 1952.
The School Building's Design
The original Dennis High School building has a special shape, like the letter "L". It is a one-story building made of red bricks. It was built in a style called Colonial Revival architecture. This style often looks like old American colonial homes.
The building has a main part with two wings that stick out. A third wing, which made the building L-shaped, holds the school's auditorium. In 1954, one more classroom was added to the building.
A Place in History
Because of its important history and unique design, Dennis High School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it is recognized as a special place that should be protected for future generations.
