A Career in Law and Service

O'Mallun worked as a lawyer for powerful rulers in Europe. He served Archduke Albert and Infanta Isabella of the Spanish Netherlands. The Spanish Netherlands was a region that is now mostly Belgium and Luxembourg.

In 1616, he received a special honor. He was made a knight of the Order of Calatrava. This was a very old and respected Spanish military and religious order.

Dermot O'Mallun also held other important positions. He was an equerry (a personal attendant) to Infanta Isabella. He also served as a gentleman of the chamber for Emperor Ferdinand II. This meant he was a trusted member of the Emperor's household. He even led a cavalry regiment (a group of soldiers on horseback) for the Emperor.

Becoming a Baron

On October 5, 1622, Dermot O'Mallun received a high honor from King James I. He was given the title of Baron Glean-O'Mallun and Courchy. This made him a member of the peerage of Ireland. The title was meant to pass down to his male relatives, starting with Albert O'Mallun.

Family and Legacy

Dermot O'Mallun was married to Marie Hannedouche. She was from a noble family. They had a daughter named Anne Marie. She later married Jacques Quarré.

Dermot O'Mallun passed away on May 1, 1639. He was buried in the Church of St Gudule in Brussels, which is now the capital of Belgium. His wife, Marie, died a couple of years later in 1641.

The title of Baron Glean-O'Mallun likely ended around May 1641. However, another person named Dermot Malone later used this title. He was part of the Patriot Parliament in 1689.
