Derrick Dowell (born September 8, 1965) is an American who used to play professional basketball. He was known for his skills as a small forward and power forward.

Derrick Dowell's Early Basketball Days
Derrick Dowell grew up in Evansville, Indiana. He became a very good basketball player at Benjamin Bosse High School. During his last two years there, his team had an amazing record. They won 51 games and only lost 2! This showed everyone how talented he was.
Playing College Basketball at USC
After high school, Derrick went to college at the University of Southern California (USC). He played for the USC Trojans basketball team. He was a star player there too. In his last two seasons, he was named to the First-team All-Pac-10. This means he was one of the best players in his college conference.
Derrick's Professional Basketball Career
In 1987, Derrick Dowell was chosen in the 1987 NBA draft. The Washington Bullets picked him as the 37th player overall. The NBA is the top professional basketball league in the United States. Even though he was drafted, Derrick never played in an NBA game.
He played one season for the Rapid City Thrillers. This team was part of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). The CBA was a league where players often tried to get noticed by NBA teams. Sadly, Derrick's career ended early because of an injury to his Achilles tendon.
Derrick's Family and Basketball
Basketball runs in Derrick Dowell's family! His sister, Cheryl Dowell, was also a great basketball player. She played for Bosse High School, just like Derrick. She then went on to play college basketball for the Long Beach State 49ers.
Derrick's daughter, Jalaya, also plays college basketball. She plays for the Oakland City Mighty Oaks. Before that, she played for the Bellarmine Knights. It's clear that the Dowell family has a strong connection to the sport!
