A Look Back: Desaguadero's History
Desaguadero was once a very important stop along the Camino Real del Oeste. This was a major road that travelers used to go from Buenos Aires to places like San Luis, Mendoza, and even Santiago de Chile!
The Old Post House
Imagine traveling a long distance by horse or carriage. You'd need places to rest and get fresh horses. That's what a post house was for! Desaguadero had one of these important stops.
In the early 1800s, a traveler named Peter Schmidtmeyer visited Desaguadero. He wrote about his journey in a book published in 1824. He described the area as a "desert" with little water. He said the post house was a "miserable dwelling" but offered roasted meat.
A Glimpse from the Past
Peter Schmidtmeyer also mentioned the river nearby, which had some water and was home to wild ducks, geese, and swans. An Italian artist named Agostino Aglio made a drawing of the Desaguadero post house based on Schmidtmeyer's notes. This drawing shows travelers arriving and horses being led to a corral to be chosen for the next part of the journey. It gives us a great idea of what life was like there long ago!
Desaguadero's Climate
Desaguadero has a climate with hot summers and cool winters. The hottest temperatures can reach over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer. Winters can be quite cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing. Most of the rain falls during the summer months.
