Devabhuti (83–75 BCE), also known as Devbhomi, was the last king of the Shunga Empire in ancient India. He ruled for about eight years. After his death, his chief minister, Vasudeva Kanva, took control of the kingdom. This marked the end of the Shunga dynasty and the beginning of the Kanva rule.
Devabhuti's Rule as Shunga King
Devabhuti was one of the later kings of the Shunga Empire. After the first powerful king, Pushyamitra Shunga, the later Shunga rulers had less power. Their ministers often held much of the real control.
According to an ancient text called Bana's Harshacharita, Devabhuti was killed by his chief minister, Vasudeva Kanva. After Devabhuti's death, Vasudeva Kanva became the new ruler. This event changed the leadership of the kingdom.
