Ratu Deve Toganivalu (1864 – 21 February 1939) was an important Fijian chief and politician. He was the leader, or Roko Tui, of Bua from 1909 to 1928. He also served as a member of the Legislative Council, which was a group that helped make laws for Fiji, between 1926 and 1938.

Ratu Deve Toganivalu was born in 1864. He grew up to become a respected leader in Fiji. His work helped shape the Bua Province and the wider government.

Starting His Career

In 1880, Ratu Deve Toganivalu began working as a clerk in Levuka. A clerk is someone who handles office tasks and records.

In 1888, he joined the civil service. This means he started working for the government. He became a Native Tax Inspector. He also served as the Governor's Matanivanua, which is a special assistant. Later, he became a Native Stipendiary Magistrate. This role meant he helped solve legal issues. He left the civil service in 1927.

Leading Bua Province

On January 1, 1909, Ratu Deve Toganivalu became the Roko Tui of Bua. This was a very important leadership role for the province. He held this position until 1928. His son, George Toganivalu, took over from him.

Under Ratu Deve Toganivalu's leadership, Bua became known as a well-run province. It was also seen as a place that kept its traditions strong.

Serving in Government

In 1926, Ratu Deve Toganivalu became a member of the Legislative Council. This council was a group of people who advised the government and helped create laws. He served on this council until 1938.

In 1928, he received an Imperial Service Order. This was a special award given for excellent service to the country. He left the Legislative Council in 1938. Ratu Deve Toganivalu passed away in February 1939.
