Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Diarmait Ó Cobhthaigh was an Irish poet who lived around the year 1584. He was part of a very old family of poets and storytellers.

His family, the Ó Cobhthaighs, were famous bards. Bards were special poets and musicians who kept the history and stories of important families alive through songs and poems. They lived in an area that is now County Westmeath in Ireland. This region was once the heart of an ancient kingdom called Mide. Diarmait's family came from a specific area within Mide known as Fir Thulach.

Diarmait's Poems

Diarmait Ó Cobhthaigh wrote many poems. One of his most well-known works was a sad poem, called a lament, for his relative, Uaithne Ó Cobhthaigh, who died in 1556. This poem starts with the lines, "Dá néll orcha ós iath Uisnigh" which means "Two clouds of woe over the land of Uisneach" in Irish. It shows how deeply he felt about the loss.

He also wrote five important poems about theology, which is the study of religious beliefs. These poems explored deep ideas about faith and life. Here are some of their titles:

  • Díon cloinne a n-éec a n-athar ("Safeguard of children in the death of their father") - This was a very long poem with 160 verses!
  • Fiú a bheatha bás tighearna ("The cost of life the death of a lord")
  • Mairg as aidhne a n-aghaidh breithimh ("Alas! the pleader is facing the judge")
  • Mairg nach taithigh go teacgh ríogh ("Alas! that I did not go to the king's house")
  • Deacair aidhneas earca ríogh ("A powerful argument the tributes of a king")

Today, you can find copies of some of these poems at the Royal Irish Academy, which is a famous place in Ireland that collects important historical documents and writings.
