Diego Fernández (born around 1520, died 1581) was a Spanish adventurer and historian from the 1500s. He is famous for writing important books about the history of Peru.

Biography of Diego Fernández

Diego Fernández was born in a place called Palencia, in Spain. He first studied to become a church official. However, around 1545, he decided to travel to Peru, which was then a Spanish colony in South America.

Once in Peru, Diego Fernández joined the royal army. He served under a leader named Alonzo de Alvarado. Later, in 1555, Andres Hurtado de Mendoza became the new leader of Peru. This leader was known as the Viceroy.

The Viceroy gave Diego Fernández a very special job: he became the official chronicler of Peru. A chronicler is like a historian who writes down important events as they happen. In this role, Diego Fernández wrote about several big events. He wrote about the uprising led by Francisco Hernandez Giron. He also wrote about the rebellion of Gonzalo Pizarro. And he recorded the time when Pedro de la Gasca was in charge.

All of his writings were put together into a book called Primera y segunda parte de la Historia del Piru. This book was published in Seville, Spain, in 1571. He dedicated his work to King Philip II of Spain.

Diego Fernández wrote in a clear and easy-to-understand way. His writing style was better than many other writers of his time. He included many details in his book. Because he had access to letters and official papers from the Spanish leaders, his book is a very complete and true record of the events he described. Even though he might have had a favorite side, his book is still a very important source for learning about that time.
