Diego Fernández was an important count who lived in the Kingdom of León a long time ago, from around 1020 to 1046. He was also known as Diego Fernández de Oviedo. Diego came from a very noble family. His father was Fernando Flaínez, and his mother was Elvira Peláez.
Diego was related to King Ferdinand I. They shared the same great-grandfather, Count Fernando Bermúdez de Cea. Diego became a Count when he was quite young. He is most famous for being the father of Jimena Díaz, who married the legendary hero, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, also known as El Cid.
Diego's Family Life
Count Diego was married twice and had several children.
First Marriage
Diego's first wife was Elvira Ovéquiz. She was the daughter of Count Oveco Sánchez. Diego and Elvira had two daughters:
- Onneca Mayor Díaz, who married a man named Gundemaro Iohannes.
- Aurovita Díaz, who married Munio Godestéiz. It is believed that Munio Godestéiz might be the same person as Muño Gustioz, a character from the famous Spanish poem, Cantar de Mio Cid. This poem tells the story of El Cid. If so, Munio would have been Jimena Díaz's brother-in-law and fought alongside El Cid.
Second Marriage
Diego's second wife was probably named Cristina. She was the daughter of Fernando Gundemáriz. From this marriage, Diego had three more children:
- Rodrigo Díaz, who also became a count in a region called Asturias. He might have married a woman named Gontrodo and had two daughters, Sancha and Mayor Rodríguez.
- Fernando Díaz, who grew up to be one of the most powerful nobles of his time. He was married twice, first to Godo Gonzalez Salvadórez and then to Enderquina Muñoz.
- Jimena Díaz, who became very famous as the wife of the great hero, El Cid.
