El claustro redondo en el Colegio de Santo Tomás, Lima
The round cloister at Colegio de Santo Tomás in Lima, Peru

Fray Diego Maroto (born May 7, 1618, in Camarena, Spain – died 1696) was a very important architect in Peru during the second half of the 1600s. He was known for building strong structures in Lima, especially after big earthquakes.

Diego Maroto moved from Spain to Camarena, his hometown, to Lima, Peru. For about 40 years, he held important jobs in Lima's construction world. He was the main architect for the Metropolitan Cathedral and also supervised all the architect groups. He also oversaw royal building projects.

As an architect for the Dominican Order, Maroto created a special type of vault (a curved ceiling) that could stand up to earthquakes. This amazing technique became very popular after the big earthquake in 1687. Many important buildings in Lima, like the Cathedral of Lima and the Church of the Convent of San Agustín, started using his design.

His work included many convents for men and women, local churches, and the main Cathedral in Lima. His most famous project was the College of Saint Thomas (Colegio de Santo Tomás). The main courtyard, or cloister, of this school is the only round cloister in all of South America!
