Diego de Avendaño (born in Segovia, Spain, in 1594 – died in 1698) was an important Jesuit priest from Peru. He was a smart thinker who studied religion, law, and moral ideas. He is best known for his huge book, Thesaurus Indicus, which looked at the legal and moral questions that came up in the Spanish colonies in America.

His Life Story

Diego de Avendaño was born in Segovia, Spain, in 1594. When he was young, he moved to South America. There, he was taught by the Jesuits and later joined their group.

He became a professor of Theology and the head of the main Jesuit school in Lima, Peru, called the Colegio Máximo de San Pablo. He also served as the leader of the Jesuits in the Peruvian region. We don't know much about his personal life, but his books were published in Europe, showing how important his ideas were.

His Important Works

Diego de Avendaño wrote several books, but his most famous and important work was the Thesaurus Indicus.

  • Thesaurus Indicus (published in Antwerp between 1668 and 1686): This massive book was a deep study of the legal and moral problems faced by people living in the Spanish colonies in America. It covered many topics, from how laws should work to what was considered right or wrong in daily life. It was a very detailed and important work for its time.
