Diketo (game) facts for kids
Diketo is a fun and traditional game from South Africa and Lesotho. You might also hear it called Magave, Upuca, or Puca. It's a bit like the game Jacks that many kids play around the world. Diketo is one of ten special traditional games recognized in these countries.
How to Play Diketo
Diketo is usually played by two people. You can use small stones, pebbles, or even marbles for the game. Players often draw a small circle on the ground to keep the stones together.
To start, one player throws a special stone (sometimes called a 'gho' or 'shooter') into the air. While that stone is in the air, they quickly try to pick up as many other stones as they can from the circle. They must do this with the same hand that threw the 'gho'.
The player then has to catch the 'gho' stone before it hits the ground. If they don't catch the 'gho', or if they drop any of the stones they picked up, it's the next player's turn.
Players keep taking turns. The goal is to collect as many pebbles or marbles as possible. The person who has the most stones at the end of the game wins!
