Dionne L. Price (born August 29, 1971 – died February 22, 2024) was an amazing American statistician. A statistician is someone who works with numbers and data to understand things better. She made history as the first African-American president of the American Statistical Association (ASA). This is the biggest group for statisticians in the world!

Dionne also worked at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She was a director in a special office called Biostatistics. Her team gave important advice about medicines. This advice helped make sure new drugs were safe and worked well. They looked at medicines for infections, viruses, eye problems, and organ transplants.

Her Journey and Studies

Dionne L. Price was African-American. She grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her mother was a schoolteacher.

Dionne loved math and numbers from a young age. She studied applied mathematics at Norfolk State University. After that, she earned a master's degree from the University of North Carolina.

She then went on to get her Ph.D. at Emory University in 2000. Her special project was about "Survival Models for Heterogeneous Populations with Cure." With this work, she became the first African-American to earn a doctorate in biostatistics at Emory. Biostatistics is a field that uses statistics to solve problems in biology and health. After finishing her Ph.D., she joined the Food and Drug Administration.

Awards and Leadership

Dionne Price was a very respected leader in her field. In 2016, she was a main speaker at StatFest. This was a special conference for students from groups that are not often seen in statistics. The goal was to encourage more young people to study statistics.

In 2018, she was chosen as a Fellow of the ASA. This is a high honor given to top statisticians.

Dionne was elected the 118th president of the American Statistical Association (ASA). She started as president-elect on January 1, 2022. Her term as president began on January 1, 2023. She was the first African-American person to lead the ASA. She also became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2022.
