The Wandering Percher (scientific name: Diplacodes bipunctata) is a cool type of dragonfly. It belongs to a family of dragonflies called Libellulidae. People also call it the Red Percher Dragonfly because of its bright colors!

What Does It Look Like?

The Wandering Percher is a small to medium-sized dragonfly. Its wings can spread out to about 55 millimeters wide. That's about the length of a typical LEGO brick!

Its wings are mostly clear, like glass. But look closely, and you might see a small yellowish spot. This spot is usually found near the base of its back wings.

Male Wandering Perchers are very colorful. They have bright orange or red bodies, called an abdomen. You might see some dark marks along their back and sides. Female Wandering Perchers are usually yellowish. They also have similar dark markings on their bodies.

If you look at the side of their body, near where the wings attach, you'll see two dark spots. This part of their body is called the synthorax. One of these spots is known as the metastigma.

Where Do They Live?

In Australia, you can find the Wandering Percher almost everywhere. The only place it doesn't live is the island of Tasmania.

These dragonflies like to live near water. You can spot them near many different kinds of freshwater places. This includes ponds, streams, and even swamps.

How They Live

The Wandering Percher is very good at finding new homes. They are often one of the first insects to move into new water areas. This can be in both freshwater and slightly salty water, known as brackish water. They quickly settle in and make these places their own.
