Dipper facts for kids

A dipper was a person who had a very specific job at the beach a long time ago. Their main role was to help women use special changing rooms called bathing machines. These machines were like small wooden huts on wheels.

The dipper's job was to push these bathing machines into the water so that women could get into the sea privately. After the woman finished her swim, the dipper would then pull the machine back out of the water. They also helped the bather get safely into and out of the water. Because this work involved pushing and pulling heavy machines and helping people, a dipper needed to be quite strong and fit.
